I unfortunately was not at this smelting demo by Mike Blue but I did get to participate the next year when Ric Furrer did a smelt. It's really an awe inspiring thing to go from dirt to a knife.

I watched an episode on the History Channel on the Vikings.  I learned the Vikings cooked the peet which was everywhere in the region and the extreme temperatures brought out the iron from the peet.  Once enough was collected they would extract it from the fire and pound it - compress it - into workable iron.  They would continue this process until they had enough to create whatever they needed e.g. swords, spear tips, axes, etc.  I was amazed that such things could be made from what appeared to be nothing more than dirt.
