For any of us that took the Survival Escape and Evasion military course it is bare bones. I think a pack with the below works for me.
Fire
Compass
Gun
Food
First Aid
Water filtration or sterilization tablets.
Rope
Good knife
Sleeping Bag or ground roll. (Comfort)

What else does one need?? Really. I think that in the event that SHTF most people will be walking down a road carrying backpaks and suite cases full of shit they don't need.

Ammo for said gun. I would say a rifle. Maybe a pistol. SOme rations till you can start getting some food. A tarp for shelter. And some paracord. Other than that, your list hits the mark. Maybe a pot or some sort of container for boiling water. Sterilization tablets will only last you so long. Just my opinion.

Wow, I haven't gotten to that point in my survival preparedness yet, but I am trying to keep my load light. LOL! Yeah, I've found that gaining knowledge is critical, wife is starting to get into this stuff as well. It's nice, but we just bought fishing poles and a freaking tent, and a sleeping bag. Which I needed the sleeping bag, but I'm like, "I got a tarp already." LOL! You know how it is, and I told her today, that eventually we'll have to get rid of the fishing poles and opt for something a little more primitive in that department, cause, it's just not practical to carry those along with all of the other gear that you got. Yeah it'll be great, for a past time, but in a shtf applications, probably not so important. Smiley ANyways, I like the idea about hiding food and stuff along your route to safety. However, how do you keep the animals from digging it up? PVC pipe of some kind?

Start with a firesteel and practice. Also brush up on your first aid. One thing people don't do is learn about plant recognition. Including myself. LLgrappler is right when it comes to education and having a plan. VERY IMPORTANT!!!

Smiley HE HEHEE That's why I'm here. To learn. Smiley I was just thinking that we could start a wild edibles thread and pick a wild edible from our area that is native and maybe we could post a little something about it. What do you guys think?
