hello

i'd like to know which are , by you opinion, the best way for  sharpening  your blades?  home and on the field

... for the history , for home :    i used manufactured oilstones but now i've turned to japanese natural wetstones (...   i primarily use Binsui wetstone, which is very coarse, suitable as first stage for damaged blades and for second-third stage i use a 500g size 70+old NAKAYAMA razor along with an Iyo Nagura whetstone  and for final polishing i sweep my blades with fine leather and then with cloth )

... and for the field i have one small double sided ( coarse/fine ) manmade oilstone in a leather carry pouch, which of course is nice but not usefull due to the need of oil which you have to carry along and the volume of the staff i actually carry along with me at the end  ...

There were a couple of threads on this a while back.

http://www.campfiretalks.com/knife-talk/how-do-you-sharpen-your-edges/

http://www.campfiretalks.com/knife-talk/sharpening/

http://www.campfiretalks.com/knife-talk/wsk-sharpening/

http://www.campfiretalks.com/knife-talk/stropping-paste/

Perhaps we should Consolidate all of these threads into it's own group.
To make the information more readily available.

I think this topic has great merit and everyone should be putting in their input on this one. I do think we could create a child board on Sharpening Topics. That will make the information more concise by Topic.

What we do not want to do is get it to broad.

But There is More than one way to Skin a CAT and I always learn something from you guys putting in your techniques as well. I have a home system, a Pack System and an Oh crap Make due System.

I will get a few shots of this. Also Mike Billman did a good video on sharpening on you tube. they dull a knife rather brutally and bring it back to life. Very educational.
I will find it and post it up.

this is very good to revisit....  without buying industrial sized sanders, and real recommendations on steels/stones that one should purchase for those that are less experienced?

i have one of these, and when i first bought it, i thought it was a piece of shit. then i learned how to use it, make it do the things i needed it to.. now, it does all of my handle work, im learning how to sharpen on it, and its the only tool i have for this hobby besides my scroll saw. i love it, and when i get sharpening down on it, it will be even better!  belts are a little hard to come by but this place is awesome!

Ashtj,

I think you need a $100 4x36 and a drum sander for you drill. I put this build along using this gear just to show how to do it. They have these sanders at places like Harbor freight for $80 I think. Home depot is like $125. Very inexpensive.
